Sustainability
The sewer cleaning industry is undergoing a transition towards electrification, with expectations that most new machines purchased within the next decade will be fully electric. Rioned has been a key player in this shift, introducing the first all-electric sewer cleaning machine in 2019 and continuing to invest in innovation to support greener operations across the sector.
The company’s approach to sustainability is aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on renewable energy use, waste reduction, and lowering carbon emissions. Measures include reducing energy and water consumption at production facilities, implementing waste recycling and reuse systems, and designing equipment that produces fewer emissions. Rioned has set an ambition to become a climate-neutral business by 2030, supported by its internal Sustainability Charter, which also extends to customers, partners, and service agents.
Rioned’s sustainability commitments also reflect wider changes in regulation and infrastructure. With more European cities introducing Low and Ultra-Low Emission Zones and some committing to ban diesel vehicles from city centres as early as 2025, there is growing pressure for cleaner equipment. While regulations for mobile machinery currently trail behind those for commercial vehicles, the industry anticipates stricter standards in the near future. Against this backdrop, Rioned’s move toward electric machines positions it as an early leader in supporting businesses to meet both environmental requirements and reputational expectations.
